Disneyland Food in California

Favorites, Likes, & Dislikes:

Now that our crazy, busy, December-and-a-half is finally winding down, 
my blog-itch is slowly returning. I say "December-and-a-half" because peak-season for my UPS-man-of-a-husband begins around Thanksgiving (sometimes earlier), and though the pressure from Christmas ends after Christmas Day, the long hours can dwindle until mid-January. 

But first, lemme take a week to quickly finish blogging my California trip that was back in October. I have some fun ones that I've been wanting to share.

Up first (well second if you count my California North Woods post)
we have the happiest place on Earth.
I have family in Southern California--not too far from D.land--that we visited one to three times a year as a kid. When I got old enough, I would stay with my grandparents for a couple weeks at a time. Disneyland (or Knotts) was/is a must. My cousins, aunts/uncles, grandparents, parents, siblings; we pretty much want to live there. My fun grandparents purchased this family heirloom seen here:


So though I've been to Disneyland countless times, I have almost zero memories of must-eats. If we were hungry it was usually carrot sticks and pb&j, maybe a churro...and I swear they have the best churros on the planet. So I had to do some serious studying of what and where to eat at Disneyland. I knew I wouldn't be able to eat all I wanted from the long list I carried with me, and a big thanks to my brother, my son, and my grandma. Ha, I would buy one of something and we would share it amongst the four of us.

Note: I apologize in advance for not taking a picture of the front of each location. I don't know how I forgot since that is one of my must-have pics for each post. My only excuse is that it was hot and the sun was blaring, a lot going on, you know how D.land is.

First up is the "infamous" corn dog. 
I had no idea, but this corn dog was on every list that I found about food from Disneyland. 

Most people order a corn dog from The Little Red Wagon at the end of Main Street in Disneyland, BUT, we were wandering the boardwalk at California Adventure and I spotted a big sign that read "Corn Dog Castle." I had read to keep your eye out for lesser-known locations of certain popular food items, so I thought this must be a good chance to check something off the list since there was NO line. 

It literally was the best traditional, classic corn dog of all corn dogs. The perfect example of a corn dog. What I mean is, crispy on the outside, thick-ish corn bread coating (cooked through), with a steaming large hot dog in the center; it is EXACTLY the intent of a corn dog. It is definitely, as they say, a must-eat when visiting Disneyland.

After leaving California Adventure and heading over to Disneyland, this is what we found at the end of Disneyland Main Street--ha, a huge line at The Little Red Wagon! 
It wrapped further back and around that I was unable to fit in the photo. 
Phew, dodging a huge line at Disneyland is always a major bonus. 
 Corn dogs are also available at Stage Door Cafe in Frontierland, try the mozzarella sticks while you're there.

Mint Julep ::: Monte Cristo SandwichSliced Turkey, Ham, and Swiss fried in a light batter and served with Berry Purée dusted with Powdered Sugar 

These two items pictured above are two things that have been on my own list of must-eats for a long time now. I've only had these items at the Blue Bayou in years past, which is where they originated, but as I studied, I learned you can also find them at Café Orleans next door. Yay! Though the Blue Bayou restaurant is fun, because it's located amongst the Pirates of the Caribbean ride, it's pretty dark, it's expensive, and it's hard to hear your friends and fam at the table. The bread on this particular Monte Cristo was quite thick, and I'm not sure if they've changed it, or if it's slightly different than the one at Blue Bayou, but it wasn't a change that bothered me; my craving was still curbed. Take note, that the Monté Cristo is a VERY rich sandwich. My grandma and I shared these four triangles, but I could've had one slice and I would've been good. They do let you share, so that's what I recommend. The Mint Julep is very refreshing on a hot day at Disneyland. It's one of my favorite drinks of all time. Note: I didn't see the Mint Julep listed on the menu at Café Orleans, so just ask, they have it.

Mickey-shaped Beignets (these were pumpkin during the Fall season) - topped with Powdered Sugar served with Raspberry Coulis and Vanilla Bean Crème Anglaise 

Heavy dessert after a heavy meal, but I had to have the Mickey shape. If you get a couple of salads or crepes at Café Orleans, then maybe you'll have room for the beignets. 
They would also be a great quick-stop treat.

Cream-Cheese Pretzel at a Pretzel Cart

I put the above statement in quotes, because that's what I had read, but as much as I kept my eye out, I didn't see any pretzel carts! Then towards the evening, my brother spotted one. I never knew that these pretzel carts carried a sweet-cream-cheese-filled pretzel. If only I had known! These....were good.... My brother and I agreed that if we had had these as kids, we would've HAD to have one each time we returned.

Right before we headed out, we shimmied ourselves into a spot and watched the parade down Main Street. For me, it's a tradition to get a treat on our way out of the park, and we like to sit on a bench and people-watch while we eat our treat.
I can't remember the exact name of the place I went to, but it was a large candy/chocolate shop on Main Street. I was ordering a Chocolate-Covered Peanut Butter Sandwich, and the girl in front of me was adamant about ordering a few Mickey Cake Pops. I love store-made cake pops, so of course I got one of those, too. (I'll explain what I mean by "store-made" another time).

Honestly, I didn't like either one. I didn't know I was biting into a marshmallow ear, so at first I was like, "What the crap, they gave me a chocolate-covered marshmallow by mistake!" It was that fake-tasting marshmallow stuff. Then I took a bite of the side, and my first thought was, "Is that the cake?" It was cake-batter flavored waxy something-or-other. No one liked it, and most of it got thrown away. The Chocolate-Covered Peanut Butter Sandwich (which in itself sounds awesome) was also a letdown. I might've liked it better if it was a dark chocolate coating, but still, the peanut butter was a waxy texture and the cookie was way too hard. Most of it, too, got thrown away. Skip these two "must-eats" and get a baked good, or even better, scooped ice cream, to eat on your way out.

So there you have it! After this day, I pretty much didn't get hungry the rest of my trip. 
I'm adding the corn dog and the cream cheese pretzel to my must-eats. 
Items still on my to-try list: Dole Whip, Gumbo, Crepes, Mickey Mouse Waffles, Croissant Sandwiches, Fried Chicken, Mozzarella Sticks, Fried Green Tomato Sandwich, and various restaurants.
